I am pleased to announce the appointment of Gabe Eszterhas as associate vice president and controller for the University. In this role, Gabe will report directly to me and be responsible for financial and tax reporting, internal controls, endowment accounting, and year-end and other audits. He will also be a key stakeholder in the Workday finance system implementation.
Many of you know Gabe from his time as director of budget and planning at the Miller School of Medicine, where he served with distinction before moving to his current role as assistant vice president for foundation and direct support organizations at Florida International University.
He previously held finance and administrative roles at Baruch College and New York University. Gabe began his career as an infantry officer in the United States Army, where he served for six and a half years on active duty with additional time in the reserves, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from the City College of the City University of New York, a master’s degree from Columbia University, and an M.B.A. from New York University, and will complete a master’s degree in accounting at FIU in August.
I worked closely with Gabe at the Miller School and know him to be a person of the highest integrity, who works hard and shares our values. He has a keen understanding of the workings of higher-ed and academic medical centers from experience at four colleges and universities.
Gabe asked to provide FIU with 90 days’ notice, so he will join us in mid-June. In the meantime, the Controller’s Office will be led by Vice President of Finance and Treasurer John Shipley.
Please join me in congratulating Gabe and welcoming him back to the University.
